Part II: Collaboration OmnibusFeaturing unique collaborations with artists closely connected to Momoyo, the founder of GIFT.
My dear friend Hitomin once told me this:
“Your long arms, long legs, strong body, and incredible expressiveness—these are precious gifts from God. You are making the most of them through dance. And when we watch you dance, we receive inspiration and courage. We start to wonder, maybe I can take on a new challenge too.
In this way, just by being yourself, you give a gift to others. And those of us who receive that gift will surely become a gift to someone else in turn.
Your very existence is a gift to the world.”
Those heartfelt words inspired me to choose “GIFT” as the theme of my performances.
Thank you, Hitomin 💝
And thank you, God 💝
I have been captivated by dance, and my life has been shaped by living together with the art I love.
As a child, I was shy and introverted, but when I encountered dance, it changed my life completely.
Discovering the joy of dancing made me realize: I want to keep living through dance!
Yet, what stood in front of me was “common sense” as adults defined it—stability, security, and what society called happiness. Confronted by those expectations, I found myself questioning:
How should I live? Why does no one understand my feelings?
My heart wandered, trapped behind an invisible wall.
At that time, I was working as a bank employee, but I left the stability of that job to study dance in New York. Upon returning to Japan, I went against opposition and moved to Tokyo to pursue dance full-time.
Life in Tokyo was dazzling—everything shone brightly. I met dancers unlike any I had seen before. Each day was stimulating, exciting, and fresh.
But those days did not last long.
Even though I had decided to live as a dancer, reality was harsh: working part-time jobs just to get by, comparing myself with others, unable to confide in anyone.
I lost sight of who I was.
What does it mean to be human? Who am I?
It felt like I was wandering alone in a dark maze.
Still, the decision to live through dance never disappeared. It remained inside me as a small but unyielding light. I persevered, living each day with all my strength.
Then one day, a dance teacher asked me:
“Momoyo, what do you really want to become? Is being a backup dancer truly your dream?”
Until then, I thought being a backup dancer was the greatest job possible. I had never imagined being the one at the center of the stage. Those words changed my awareness completely.
From that moment, new opportunities began to come my way.
Although I had come to Tokyo alone, when I looked around I realized I had many companions. Many people were cheering me on. Through dance, I met countless people and built precious connections.
I learned what it means to care for others.
I learned what it means to cherish others.
People taught me about emotions, and about who I am as a person.
And with the love I received from so many, I now want to return it with even greater love.
From now on, I will continue to dance and to create.
Dance is joy. Dance is happiness.
Just as I once felt my heart leap with excitement, I want many others to experience that same joy of dancing.
This is the passion that drives me forward. And taking this step with unwavering energy—that is what “GIFT” represents.
The name Momoyo means “to live a hundred lives.” True to its meaning, dance has allowed me to encounter and experience countless worlds.
Dance saved me. Dance transformed my life.
And my greatest strength has always been knowing: I have never truly been alone.
“By simply existing as you are, you give a gift to someone else.
Those who receive that gift will, in turn, become a gift to others.
Your very existence is a gift to the world.” 💝
Through this independent performance series GIFT,
if even a single gift is delivered to your heart,
I will be truly happy. ✨
